If you thought that the coffee maker your own had nothing to do with the quality of coffee you make, think again. The Technivorm Moccamaster is one hell of a machine, for sure.
Yes, it is not exactly cheap but you get what you pay for. The Moccamaster definitely makes some out-of-this world tasting coffee, and if you have the excellent idea to marry that with outstanding beans, the result becomes truly special.

Technivorm Moccamaster
Why is it the best?
Yes, it is true that you can find less expensive machines but when it comes to gourmet drip machines, the Technivorm Moccamaster is up there for sure.
We have been using this machine for over 2 years, cleaned it routinely once and a descaling every 90-100 brews.
Yes, if you look closely inside the carafe you can see some light stain gradually forming, but this is if you want to be picky. We also know that if something goes wrong, we could get parts replaced.
We can clearly see the difference between our old Starbucks and this machine (even though I did love our old Starbucks Aroma though). This one is definitely one step higher.
A bit heavier to use (water tank is not removable and there is no separate lid for the filter holder) but you can live with it. One thing I also like is the fact that the coffee is kept very hot for several hours thanks to the thermal pot with completely sealed lid (not brew through lid).
Another thing you need to keep in mind is that the unit is not fully portable. Even if we have a decently large kitchen, it is not easy to find a place for it when you’re not using it. In addition, the cord is quite big.
There’s also a small cone holding the coffee grounds and that cord just sits in place instead of being attached in a more permanent fashion. Again, it’s all good if the machine sits in one place but you have less space and need to move it around more often, this is worth thinking about.
Advantages
- Thermal carafe with stainless steel. Brew-basket with drip-stop feature you can adjust manually
- Only 5 minutes required to brew a full carafe. Easy to use and not noisy during brewing process
- Copper heating element makes it easy to heat water & controlling brewing temperature is a breeze.
- BPA free plastic parts used
- Brew Pause (You can actually sip while the machine is brewing)
- Easy cleaning
Disadvantages
- Can get slower after a few years
- Carafe may color on the inside
- May be hard to close it at times dure to threads of the lid not matching carafe well for some models
- Use of 2 types of lids for carafe may add extra layer of complexity
- Panel below the carafe does not stay attached
Verdict
We’ve been pretty much using it daily. It’s a very consistent machine, does great brewing, is easy to clean and maintains and very hot. For me, this drip coffee maker makes some great coffee. It’s definitely on par with the machine used at our local coffee shop.
If you put it side to side with another machine like the Bonavita 1900SS, the Technivorm Moccamaster is able to definitely pull out some more complex flavors. It also has almost a charismatic presence in the kitchen as it’s so elegant and the build quality is very good too.
The only small thing that annoys me is the fact that when you’re finished brewing coffee and you put the lid back on the carafe, it will make the carafe too tall and it will not go under the brew basket. So the carafe is left there by itself on the kitchen bench, unless of course you take it with you to your desk. Small gripe though. Overall, a fantastic buy.
